Up for sale, a 2006 Mosrite USA Custom Shop 1963 Ventures Model bass in near-mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case, hangtags and COA. An extremely rare model with set-neck configuration, bound body and custom color California Blue finish, this Ventures Model bass was produced by Mosrite’s official licensee, Fillmore, made in much smaller quantities than their highly sought after Ventures Model guitars.

Few instruments have a more storied history than the Mosrite brand, especially in the modern era, and this particular bass is a very rare, upper-tiered model crafted by Fillmore in Japan. Perhaps best known for being imported to the USA by Ed Roman and also for their partnership with Dana Moseley, Mosrite founder Semie Moseley’s daughter, Fillmore purported that these instruments were “USA-made” (whether this referred to components and/or assembly is a real gray area), yet this instrument’s origin is definitively with the Fillmore factory in Japan. Most importantly, this Mosrite is an extremely finely crafted instrument, worthy of Semie Moseley’s legacy, and Fillmore’s Mosrites are among the closest ever offered to early ’60s spec in their tonal response and features, with tight tolerances and exquisite fit and finish work.

A short scale affair with a 30 1/2″ scale length, this Mosrite is strung with 45-100 D’addario Chromes flatwound strings, and the basswood body (just like the original ’60 Ventures Models) offers a smooth, even-sounding tonal platform for the neck position single coil pickup. Mirroring ’63 spec, this bass has a set-neck design, unlike the bolt-on necks seen on the vast majority of Mosrite basses. Delivering growl and round punch, the pickup meters at an impressive 14k ohms, yielding a bold tonal response. This Mosrite weighs 9lbs 5oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mikes Guitar Bar with easy-playing action and accurate intonation.

The notably slender, contoured body sports a distinctive German carve framed by multi-ply binding, and this bass is extremely well-kept, with cosmetic wear on the gloss California Blue limited to just a few tiny marks and faint finish scratches. The neck profile has an unusual burst finish, highlighting light flame figuring in the maple.

The original Mosrite-branded brown tolex hardshell case is included, along with the factory paperwork.
